Afterword

We write code in a world full of uncertainty,
stress and complexity.

Still, we write code.
We create.

Some of us create because we cannot help it.
Some of us create because it is our job.
Most of us do it for both reasons.

When we write our first lines of code,
it feels like magic.
But somewhere along the way,
that magic is buried under all this stress.

Over the years, I have seen many trends come and go.
Promises that this time,
everything would finally make sense.

I saw the agile movement
inspire a generation of developers.
Then I saw enterprises turn it upside down
until agile meant the opposite of agility.

I saw small, helpful systems run perfectly
on a machine under a desk, solving real problems.
Then I saw ecosystems managed by twenty people
do nothing but waste resources.

I saw people build the cleanest of code
for their hobby projects.
And I saw professional projects
drain all the beauty and fun out of coding.

Every trend passes.

Maybe it leaves something good behind.
Maybe it does not.
That is not for me to decide.

I cannot stop progress.
I do not want to.

But I can choose how I contribute.

I can choose not to become an algorithm.
I can choose not to treat people as numbers.
I can choose to care more about emotions
than about metrics.

And I can choose not to let any process, trend,
or company steal the magic of code from me.

Because code is strange and wonderful.
It is art and a tool at the same time.
That is worth protecting.

So I choose to let this positive view be my driving force.

Let’s code happy.
